The story of my learning about horses...
In these pages, I want to describe my experiences as I, somewhat - ahem, later in life - start out on what for me is a long overdue effort to learn about horses in general, and eventually learn to ride competently
Having started helping at Calico, I quickly began to realise just how little I knew and how much there was to learn. This is frustrating, and complicated by the fact that I'm only able to spend a few hours a week there. Very inadequate, but all I can do right now. But with considerable help (and patience!) from Dal & Kim and the support of others, my education has begun!
Of course one of the very first things I learned to do was muck out. Properly. Like most other things, I've found this isn't as simple as it sounds and there's a certain art to it! (Actually, and I know this sounds silly, but I do find it quite a relaxing and almost therapeutic job!)
Everyone's been so kind and helpful. Recently, two of the younger members of the team showed me how to make up a bed from scratch. I've been absolutely amazed by the knowledge, skill and ability of some of the younger people. They're achieving things already that I doubt I'll manage in the rest of my life. (like jumping for example. even the thought frightens me...!!)
